GARY BAUTELL AFN Europe RIP
Last week, AFN Europe and the DOD lost one if it’s longest ever serving members. Gary Bautell who has been called “the voice of AFN” died after contributing more than 60 years to the organization as a service member and as a civilian.
Gary was our steward in this broadcasting profession and guided and mentored more than 600 military broadcast journalists. But he influenced life outside of the base too. He was considered a legend to German nationals as well – his death made national news. Gary broadcasted During the 60s and 70s where it’s reported that 60 million Europeans listened to AFN radio broadcasts.
During his tenure Gary interviewed U.S. Presidents and German Chancellors and covered more than half a century of world history during his news reports.
GARY BAUTELL, longtime AFNE radio DJ, news announcer, news producer, station manager, former head of network news and trainer died at the age of 80, on November 23, 2022 as a result of injuries from an auto accident.
Today AFN held a Memorial Service at the chapel on Hainerberg in Wiesbaden.
Gary was a living piece of AFN’s history, who attempted to keep the network running in the best of “radio” tradition. He taught several generations at AFN, their “trade”. And he is a big loss to our network.
We want to take a moment to thank Gary for everything he did, he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
